Sydney Design in Architecture: Curriculum and Entry Guide

The University of Sydney is a separate institution; its Bachelor of Design in Architecture is not an INTIAU programme or partnership. The course is three years full-time at Camperdown/Darlington, with 144 credit points.

When comparing architecture courses, make space for drawing, observation and argument as well as the final image. Begin with a place you know well: a room, entrance or covered walkway. Write what you would need to understand before changing it. This gives you a concrete question to carry into a curriculum rather than a vague preference for an impressive building.

Read the studio ladder with its supporting units

The handbook table distinguishes prerequisites from corequisites. It requires 102 credit points of core study and includes a designated professional-practice prerequisite for students intending to proceed to the Master of Architecture.

Selected studios, not the complete course
Stage Selected official components
1000 level BDES1026 Architecture Studio 1A; BDES1027 Architecture Studio 1B.
2000 level BDES2026 Architecture Studio 2A; BDES2027 Architecture Studio 2B.
3000 level BDES3026 Architecture Studio 3A; BDES3027 Architecture Studio 3B.

Build two parallel columns in your comparison notes. In the first, track the studio sequence. In the second, record supporting theory, technical and representational study. Connect the columns only where the handbook states a rule. A subject that sounds useful may still be an elective, while a less visually exciting unit may be essential to later progression.

Use a syllabus example without projecting it forward

The 2026 BDES1026 unit page describes design development through material exploration, modelling and communication. It lists BDES1011 as a corequisite. The page links the session outline containing assessment and weekly detail; this example is not a promise about a future year.

For a close comparison, choose one learning outcome and ask what evidence would show that you had achieved it. Distinguish understanding an idea, representing it and evaluating it after feedback. If the assessment outline is unavailable for your intended session, leave its weighting blank. Do not substitute an older assessment schedule while labelling it current.

Practical exercise: redesign an entrance on paper

Select a fictional library entrance used by a wheelchair user, a person carrying books and someone seeking a quiet waiting space. Sketch the existing arrangement using a simple rectangle and a consistent scale. Mark the route through it, where people pause and where competing activities might collide. Use observations from a public place only if they can be recorded without identifying anyone.

Create two alternatives that respond to different priorities. One might reduce route crossings; the other might provide a clearer waiting area. For each, explain one benefit and one compromise. Add a small section sketch to test the relationship between enclosure, visibility and human movement. Label every invented dimension as an exercise assumption rather than a building standard.

Finish with a two-minute explanation to a peer. Ask them to trace the route with a finger and identify the least clear decision. Revise the drawing and keep both versions. The final output should be a small set of connected drawings and a paragraph explaining a changed judgement, not a claim that the proposal is ready for construction.

Match the route to your applicant category

Checked on 17 October 2026, the portfolio pathway for Semester 1 2027 is restricted to eligible domestic applicants with a current UAC application. Round 2 closes on 23 November 2026. It can strengthen an application; it does not replace the academic application.

The current UAC international guide identifies eligible school qualifications for its 2026-27 cycle; other international applicants apply directly to institutions. Check that classification before choosing a portal.

Keep entry conditions, optional selection pathways and later professional study in separate notes. A portfolio deadline is not automatically the deadline for every applicant. Save the official page date beside any condition you intend to act on, then recheck the live course and application pages before submitting.

Three practical questions

Does this bachelor alone complete architect registration?

No. Sydney describes further requirements and an application to the Master of Architecture as a later step.

Can every international applicant use this portfolio pathway?

No. The published pathway specifies eligible domestic applicants.

What is the most useful preparation output?

A coherent observation, two alternatives and a reasoned revision, with assumptions clearly distinguished from evidence.
