A useful biology-degree comparison moves between levels of explanation. Ask whether your question concerns a cell, an organism, an interaction or a larger environment. Original worked exercise: absolute and relative change
This fictional paper comparison is independent of Federico II teaching. Imagine two labelled groups with counts taken at the same two stipulated observation points. Group A changes from two units to four. Group B changes from ten units to fifteen. No organisms, experiment or causal mechanism are being described.
A adds two units; B adds five. If the question is which count increased most in absolute terms, B has the larger increase. Now calculate change relative to the starting count. A increases by 2/2 = 100%; B increases by 5/10 = 50%. A has the larger proportional increase. These answers address different questions.
Write both descriptions without using the ambiguous phrase grew faster. State whether you mean additional units or change relative to baseline. Then imagine a third count for A of three instead of four. Its proportional increase would be 50%, matching B, while its absolute increase would still be only one unit.
Next remove the assumption of a shared observation interval. If A’s observations were separated by two days and B’s by one, the original changes alone would no longer provide a like-for-like rate comparison. Record the missing interval before attempting any rate calculation. Do not invent intermediate observations or assume a particular growth curve.
Finish with a short evidence note containing the two initial counts, the two final counts, the chosen comparison and one unanswered question. Explain why a difference between groups does not identify a cause. This small exercise develops clear reporting; it does not predict biological behaviour or replace laboratory instruction.
