The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona offers the four-year, 240-credit Grau en Ciències Ambientals at its Bellaterra campus. This independent Environmental Science programme is not an INTIAU qualification or partnership. It is on-site, with Catalan, Spanish and English used in teaching. Official programme record.
When comparing environmental programmes, define the boundary of the problem before collecting indicators. A count can describe material entering a process, leaving it or remaining in storage. Those are different quantities. Write the question next to the boundary so that a later percentage does not acquire a broader meaning than the evidence supports.
Selected courses connect several kinds of evidence
UAB’s teaching-guide index identifies its current edition as 2026/27 and flags individual older guides where applicable. It also directs readers to each course’s language information. The following selection uses unflagged current entries. Current teaching-guide index.
| Stage | Selected course | Comparison question |
|---|---|---|
| Year one | Fonaments de Biologia; Sociologia Ambiental | Which environmental and social observations are needed? |
| Year two | Ecologia; Projecte Integral II: Gestió del Territori | How are different sources combined? |
| Year three | Prevenció, Reciclatge i Tractament de Residus | What exactly enters and leaves the boundary? |
The selected waste course is a required six-credit third-year unit in 2026/27. Its outline addresses prevention, recovery and treatment of solid waste alongside industrial gaseous emissions. It names Environmental Engineering as prior study. Selected official course guide.
Use this example to compare more than topic coverage. Place the course’s problem area beside the evidence you would need to discuss it, then identify which preceding component might support that work. Keep an official prerequisite or recommendation labelled as such. Your own preferred order of study is a different kind of statement.
Choose the applicant route before preparing documents
UAB provides a specific route for applicants with university-entry qualifications from EU education systems or bilateral-agreement systems, including the relevant credential and Catalan pre-enrolment process. It is a category-specific route, not a rule for every foreign qualification. Official applicant-category guidance.
Begin with the country and type of your actual school qualification, then locate the applicable university route. Keep access eligibility, competitive allocation and enrolment as separate questions. Check the current call and calendar through the university; no future application window or admission outcome is asserted in this guide, checked on 17 October 2026.
Prepare a short evidence sheet listing the exact degree, intended entry year, course-language questions and unresolved document requirements. Do not submit personal records to an informal comparison exercise. The purpose of the sheet is to clarify which official instruction you still need.
Original worked exercise: what does recovered mean?
Imagine a fictional process receiving 100 tonnes of a labelled material. Twenty tonnes are rejected, seventy leave as an accepted output and ten remain in storage. For this exercise, define recovered output as the seventy tonnes actually accepted at the boundary during the observation period. These are invented categories, not a regulatory reporting method.
The accepted-output proportion is 70/100=70%. Adding storage would produce 80%, but it would answer a different question. Storage is neither automatically accepted output nor automatically rejected material under the stipulated definitions. Keep all three destinations in the reconciliation:20+70+10=100.
Now suppose five tonnes of the accepted output are returned within the same period, while no replacement output leaves. Revise the destinations to twenty rejected, sixty-five accepted and fifteen stored. The reconciliation still totals one hundred, and the accepted-output proportion becomes 65%. Reporting seventy without the return would hide a known change.
Next imagine counting the returned five tonnes again as new incoming material. That would make an apparent input of 105, although only 100 tonnes originally entered from outside. Explain why the boundary matters: an internal recirculation should not silently become a new external input in this invented account.
Finish with a one-paragraph finding that states the period, boundary, definitions and result. Identify one fact still needed before comparing this process with another, such as whether their output categories are defined consistently. This is a paper accounting exercise, not a waste-management design or an environmental certification.
Questions for a course comparison
Does the language list promise every course in English?
No. Check the actual course and group language rather than treating a multilingual programme list as an English-only pathway.
Should an older guide be presented as current?
No. UAB explicitly flags older editions in its guide index; retain that qualification when selecting evidence.
Does a balanced account prove environmental benefit?
No. It establishes consistency within the invented accounting boundary. A broader judgement needs an appropriate question and additional evidence.
